How to Add a Custom Domain to Your Blogger Blog

Adding a custom domain to your Blogger blog is a great way to make your blog more professional and easier to remember. Here's a clear and simple step-by-step guide on how to do it. Make sure you have already purchased a domain before following these instructions!

STEP 1: Set Up Your Domain in Blogger

Sign in to Blogger and select your blog.

Then, navigate to:
  1. Settings
  2. Publishing
  3. Click on Custom domain.

STEP 2: CNAME Error

Enter your purchased domain (e.g., www.example.com). Make sure to include "www." before the domain name, not just example.com, and then click Save

You will see an error, just like I did. This is completely normal, so don’t worry!

Simply follow the instructions provided to resolve it.

You need to update the following two CNAME records:

CNAME: Name = www, Destination = ghs.google.com.
CNAME: Copy the unique values provided by Blogger for both the name and destination.

To make these changes, go to your domain provider.

STEP 3: Set Up DNS at Domain Provider

Log into your domain provider and navigate to the DNS settings. Add the following records:

First CNAME:
  • Name: www
  • Destination: ghs.google.com
Second CNAME:
  • Enter the unique CNAME values provided by Blogger.
Save the changes to apply the settings.

STEP 4: Set Up Domain Redirect

To avoid any redirection issues, we need to add A-records. It's easy – we’ll do the same thing we did with the CNAME, but this time with the A-records.

The 4 A-records you need to add are:

  • 216.239.32.21
  • 216.239.34.21
  • 216.239.36.21
  • 216.239.38.21

Finally, in Blogger:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Click on Publishing.
  3. Enable the Redirect domain option to ensure proper redirection.

If you follow these steps, your custom domain will be live on Blogger in a few hours. I recommend doing it before going to sleep, so it will be up and running by morning. If it doesn't work, if something goes wrong, or if you have any questions, leave a comment and I'll be happy to help.
