If you’ve been using Blogger for a while, you’ve probably noticed that it automatically generates a permalink for your posts. While that sounds convenient, if you don’t take a moment to review it—especially when it's automatically created—it could end up getting cut off, affecting both the look of your HTML and, more importantly, your SEO ranking. In this post, I’ll show you how to change the permalink of a post that has already been published.
*If you haven’t published your post yet, all you need to do is click on "Custom Permalink" and enter your preferred link.
STEP 1: Sign in to Blogger:
- Go to Blogger.com and log into your account.
STEP 2: Go to Your Blog:
- After logging in, click on the blog that contains the post you want to edit.
STEP 3: Find the Post:
- In the left sidebar, click Posts to see all your published posts.
- Locate the post whose URL (permalink) you want to change, and click on the title to open the post.
STEP 4: Revert the Post to Draft
- On the post editor page, look at the Publish button at the top right.
- You will see an option that says Preview. Click on Revert to draft to turn the post back into a draft. This will allow you to make changes without the post being live.
STEP 5: Change the Permalink
- Now that your post is in draft mode, look to the Post Settings section on the right side of the editor.
- Under "Permalink," click on Custom Permalink.
- Enter your desired URL in the box. The permalink should be relevant to the content, simple, and use hyphens to separate words.
STEP 6: Re-Publish the Post
- If you want to publish the post again, just click the Publish button at the top right after making your changes.
Important!!!
- Reverting the post to draft mode will make it temporarily unavailable to your readers, so they won’t be able to access it until you publish it again.
- Changing the permalink on a post that's already live will break any existing links to that post, so be mindful of your site's SEO.
And that's it! Your post is now in draft mode with a new URL, ready to be published once you’re happy with the changes.
